Thinking about sleep-dependant memory reactivation, memories that are revisited during sleep and the replay of these experiences within the sleeping brain could be related to the conscious experience of dreaming.. In relation the ghostly panelled imagery in previous works, I chose to work with pillow cases reflecting the idea that memories are ever present within our brains even during sleep yet still obscure and opaque..
I placed the panels in a layered arrangement in front of a window with the natural light penetrating through. In order for the audience to gain an insight into the idea of memory as a transparency I wanted the installation to reflect a notion of limitless depth of light through each layer forms another.
Having recently visited the Cloth and Memory exhibition at Saltaire Mill as research for both my practical work and my dissertation I was very much intrigued by the work of Hilary Bower and her installation of minimal textile panels she described the concept of the work as: 'The sacks will be a metaphor for the repetition of making, of human physicality, of a memory, of loss, of containment, of holding and of silence; of a space, not empty but filled.'
